A Morpeth charity is bidding for a share of The People’s Millions to launch a ground breaking new project which will give a helping hand to hundreds of vulnerable people across our region.
The Community Works project is part of the Castle Morpeth Disability Association based at the town’s Sanderson Arcade.
The organisation is bidding for £52,552 to set up a fantastic new project in the region which will give access to a free handyman and gardening service to people at risk of social exclusion because of their age, disability or low income.
The Peoples Millions is a grants programme run by the Big Lottery Fund in Partnership with ITV. It has been running since 2005 and has made nearly 500 awards totalling more than £24.5 million in that time.
If the Morpeth bid is successful the Community Works volunteers will provide services alongside paid workers giving them the opportunity to increase their skills while helping others.
The initiative has already been shortlisted and voting opens on June 28th – the charity is now looking for local support when the phone lines open and volunteers will be canvassing for help in the Arcade throughout the day when they will also be featured on the Tyne Tees TV.
Brooke Burgess, Independent Living Advisor at CMDA said: “Community Works is a great project which will create jobs as well as recruiting young volunteers and providing training, work experience and new skills.
“We really hope the community in Morpeth will get behind us so we can get this project off the ground and are asking people to vote for us as soon as the number is announced – calls will only cost 10p from a landline.”
Details of how to vote will be explained on Tyne Tees TV on Tuesday or by visiting www.peoplesmillions.org.uk and clicking on the Tyne Tees Region. The phone number will be available on Tuesday.
Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade Debbie Anderson said: “We’ll certainly be supporting the Community Works Project and we hope other people in Morpeth will also vote, we wish CMDA all the best in the bid!”

The Community Works project is designed to tackle environmental improvement and social exclusion. These are two issues that arise when individuals who cannot take care of their homes and gardens due to disabilities and age related ailments become excluded from society, agrophobic and generally run down. It is common, in these circumstances for individuals of the 16-24 year old age group to target these dwellings as “hang out” areas. Loitering in, and littering the community. The Community Works Project aims tackle the issue by offering NVQ Level training to young people through volunteer placements and getting them involved in the cleaning, gardening and community work of their local area
