First School Makes Barrow Blossom for In Bloom

13 July 2015

Children from the Eco Club at Morpeth First School have been “up-cycling” as part of a special planting project and transformed an old barrow at Sanderson Arcade into a fantastic floral display.

Children the age of 8 and 9 from year 4 have put their skills and knowledge into good use in preparation for the Northumbria In Bloom visit to Morpeth tomorrow (Tuesday 14th of July).

The Children transformed the unused barrow into a wonderful display of flowers with the assistance of horticulturist Raymond Dixon.

Raymond Dixon has been looking after the Arcade’s baskets and landscaping since the centre opened 5 and a half years ago and has been extremely successful in achieving a number of Awards for both the Arcade and the town.

It was decided that the planting design and colour scheme for the barrow would tie in with the existing theme at the Arcade. The children used a mixture of geraniums, petunias, begonias, fuchsias, helichrysum, bacopa and lobelia. (pink, white and blue).

Raymond guided the children to use the tall plants at the back of the barrow with a layered effect trailing over the front using geraniums, begonias and petunias.

The barrow is now positioned in between the landscaping area at the back entrance of the Arcade near the bus station.

Mrs Heighton from the Eco Club said ‘The children thoroughly enjoyed planting the barrow and they certainly learned a lot from their guide Raymond.’

Medi Parry, Centre Manager said, ‘The children from the Eco Club have done an excellent job of bringing the barrow back to life. We have received excellent feedback from our customers and I’m sure the judges will be impressed!’
