Food Festival organisers get in a jam in their search for a taste of Morpeth

25 July 2014

Organisers of the second annual Morpeth Food and Drink Festival are hoping local cooks will get jamming over the next few weeks.

This year the annual event, being held on October 4th, will host its first ever Jam Competition and the organisers are hoping for a good number of entrants from the region’s talented jam makers.

There is no restriction on ingredients used and the judges are looking forward to sampling a good array of flavours from classic strawberry, raspberry, and apricot to more unusual combinations in their search for the perfect preserve.

The winner will have their recipe crowned as Morpeth Jam with the opportunity to have it sold in The Morpeth Chantry.

The only limitation is that the jam must be home-made and the judging criteria will be based on the jam’s clarity, colour, pack head space, consistency and even the container it comes in.

Northumberland County Councillor Val Tyler, portfolio member for community infrastructure and culture, who will be making a presentation to the winning jam maker said “If you haven’t made your jam, just think of what you would be missing -  those delicious smells filling your kitchen as the berries bubble and boil en route to the jars; the experimentation of chosing different fruit combinations, and finally eating the finished product on a cold winter’s day. These are the memories of jam making.

" I am really proud to have been asked to be one of the judges and hope that this jam competition will become a valuable addition to the Morpeth Food and Drink Festival.”

More details are available on the entry form for the competition which can be requested from Zoe at Sanderson Arcade who is co-ordinating the entries. She can be contacted on zoe.christopher@sandersonarcade.co.uk or 01670 510967. Entries must be received by October 1st.
