Great North Run inspires Morpeth’s September Farmers’ Market

1 September 2014

On Sunday (September 7th) the millionth runner will cross the finish line at the North East’s iconic Great North Run.

And to mark this massive annual sporting event Morpeth will be hosting a North Run inspired Farmers’ Market on Saturday (September 6th) – helping runners with their “carb-loading” for the challenge of the race.

Julian’s Fruit and Veg will be at this week’s Farmers’ Market for those all-important potatoes as well as the humble beetroot which is becoming increasingly popular with long distance runners as the vegetable is rich in nitrates.

Whole grain bread packed with slow release carbohydrates will be available from the ever popular Northumbrian Bread Company.

There will also be plenty of good quality protein thanks to Northumberland Poultry. They have a huge variety of cuts from organic and free range chicken, duck and guinea fowl – all brought in locally from Thistleyhaugh which is a 4th generation family run farm set in rural Northumberland on the banks of the River Coquet.

For those planning a little celebration after the race there will be beer from the local brewery company VIP Brewery or a lovely homemade cake from Carols Cakes – everyone deserves a little treat after all that training.

The Farmers’ Market is held on Morpeth Market place from 9am to 3pm on Saturday September 6th.

Morpeth Market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with Morpeth Town Council, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and other local organisations through the Morpeth market working group.
