Sweet taste of success as north east chocolatier expands

4 February 2014

The artisan chocolatier Gareth James has chosen Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade to open the company’s second north-east store - due to be unveiled to shoppers later in the spring.

Headed by 23-year-old Gareth James Mellor the company has built up a reputation for luxury chocolate, cakes and truffles from a stylish chocolate shop and café in Tynemouth, which opened in 2010.

Gareth and his team have been looking for the right location for a second store in the region and have now announced they’re moving to the former Curiously Wicked unit at Sanderson Arcade which will be transformed into a brand new chocolate shop and café.

The 2,200 sq. ft. unit along the Arcade’s gallery is over two floors and will showcase Gareth’s unique and contemporary style and flavours - the young chocolatier is passionate about good quality chocolate and experimenting with different techniques and flavours.

A tempting array of chocolate truffles including traditional favourites such as champagne and sea salted caramel will be on sale alongside offerings for the more adventurous palate such as gin and tonic, Newcastle Brown Ale and a delicate orange blossom water.

Before opening his own shop Gareth worked with the award winning chocolatier Paul Young as well as pastry chef Terry Laybourne at 21 Queen Street and later Jesmond Dene House.

He’s now looking forward to expanding with a second shop and café at the Arcade which will be opening in April, bringing his mouth watering cakes and chocolates to a new audience.

Gareth is originally from Tynemouth and already has strong links with Morpeth, playing for the town’s cricket and hockey clubs, when he’s not working in the kitchen on his latest flavours and designs.

Gareth said: “Chocolate is still one of life’s little luxuries and we’re focussed on making sure what we produce and sell is of the highest quality for our customers.

“We are really excited about opening our second shop, Morpeth is a lovely town and a great location for us, the feedback we’ve had already from people has been fantastic.  We’ve got some great plans for the new store and can’t wait to open later in the spring.”

Gareth works alongside his sister Emma Mellor, and will be recruiting locally in the next few weeks at the new Morpeth store.

Medi Parry, Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Gareth James to the Arcade.  They are a great local independent company and its great news that Gareth and his team have chosen the Arcade to open their second store.”
