Young entrepreneurs in fine festive form at Christmas Market

30 November 2015

Students from The King Edward VI School in Morpeth took to the town’s market place at the weekend in a bid to be crowned the KEVI Christmas market winner 2015.

Twenty teams from the school took part in the festive event to show they’ve got what it takes to run a successful business. The stalls ranged from selling cupcakes to dream catchers and one off prints.

The students traded throughout the day from 9am and were judged by local successful business man Richard Rutherford, owner of Rutherfords of Morpeth and Neil Brown, the county wide markets manager, in a bid to win the £300 prize money.

Picking the winner proved difficult due to the standard of the stalls being so high this year but during the day’s trading the “The Night Before Christmas” was named as the best business idea.

The team from year 12 sold Christmas gift packs aimed at those looking for something on the night before Christmas. These included special film boxes and sweet tubs ranging in price from £5 to £10.

All profits made by the team on the day will going towards a special trip to Mexico taking place next year when the pupils will be helping to build new homes at orphanages.

The initiative was a collaboratively organised venture between the team at Sanderson Arcade and Morpeth market group working with The King Edward VI School. Alison Byard, Morpeth Mayor and  Nic Best a member of the Morpeth Markets Partnership and member of the North East Farmers’ Market Association was also on hand throughout the day to talk to the traders about what it takes to be a market trader.

Mr Rutherford said: “There were such a high standard of stalls this year that it proved exceptionally difficult to pick a winner – it is a great learning exercise in running a small business and they all did fantastic!”

Neil Brown County wide Markets Manager added: “Despite the weather all of the teams were in great spirit today which really made the market place come alive – I would have no hesitation about putting any of these stalls on one of the county markets, they were all great!’.

Morpeth market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with other local representatives on the Morpeth market working group.
