Crowds turn out for a fantastic weekend of foodie fun at Morpeth Food + Drink Festival

8 October 2019

The crowds turned out for a packed weekend of foodie fun and entertainment at the weekend as Morpeth hosted the town’s annual two-day Festival of Food and Drink.
More than 100 traders lined Bridge Street showcasing some delicious local produce throughout the weekend as well as the town’s fabulous Farmers’ Market which could be found in the Market Place.
Highlights of the event included the amazing “Voice of the Town” people’s choir, Masterchef finalist Lorna Robertson and fantastic performances by the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Band.
This year’s event also introduced a new Vegan Hall for festival goers and the event’s Green Team were also on hand to ensure traders were following the event’s sustainability guidelines and plastics ban.
A special “Trader of the Year” award was given with judges looking for presentation, produce, knowledge and customer service. Dozens of stalls scored well as the standard was so high but the judges picked out The Honey Store as the 2019 winner.
A new Sustainable Trader award was also given - traders were encouraged to nominate themselves and Well Hung and Tender Burgers were this year’s worthy winner.
Other entertainment across the weekend included a packed schedule of chef demonstrations in the event’s demo kitchen as well as music and dance from a host of local groups and performers. Demo Kitchen highlights include
Anna Hedworth with her new book Cook House.
Entertainment for younger festival goers included face painting, a fairground carousel and special appearances by Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty and Mary Poppins.
The premium sponsor of the annual event was Porsche Newcastle and other sponsors include; Barratt Homes, Northern Gas Networks, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade, Morpeth Town Council and Northumberland County Council. A special thank you also to our media partner BBC Newcastle.
Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade, one of the main organisers, Joel Plumley, said: “We would like to a say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make sure this year’s Morpeth Food and Drink Festival really was the biggest and best yet - especially our sponsors.
“It was a fantastic celebration of the wonderful local food and drink producers we have in the region as well as some great local musical talent.
“We have had wonderful support from our sponsors as well as the many local groups and businesses who get involved with the festival to make sure it continues to be a great success. We had some lovely new features at the event this year and we’re looking forward already to planning the 2020 event!”
The Morpeth Market is held every Wednesday from 9am – 3:30pm and the Farmer's Market is the first Saturday of every month.
