Fans’ joy at meeting national treasure Richard Coles at Sanderson Arcade book signing

14 June 2024

National treasure Richard Coles made a special appearance at Waterstones in Sanderson Arcade to meet excited fans and sign copies of his new murder mystery book.

Copies of Murder at the Monastery flew off the shelves as the popular priest, writer and radio presenter visited the Morpeth shopping centre on Thursday, June 13, to chat to fans and pose for selfies.

Richard thanked everyone for coming along to the event and added: "For writers you spend a lot of time sitting at the end of the kitchen table not meeting readers - and so it is great to get out and meet readers and support book sellers too."

Caroline Dominey, store manager at Waterstones in Morpeth, said: “We are very grateful to Richard for taking time to visit us as part of his tour and it was brilliant that so many people came out to get copies of the book signed.

“We saw a lot of happy, smiling faces and I am sure everyone will enjoy reading Richard’s latest book.”

Lottie Thompson, Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade, added: “The team was really excited to welcome Richard to Morpeth and he is the latest high-profile author to visit us, following the success of our book signing with celebrity chef Rick Stein last year.

“We are hoping to attract even more big names to the centre, so watch this space!”

Murder at the Monastery is the third instalment in the hugely popular Canon Daniel Clement series from the No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author.

The story sees Canon Clement take respite at the monastery where he was a novice following a secret humiliation.

But the monastery doesn't allow for the break he needs as tensions are building there too. A mysterious death occurs, and Daniel thinks it might be murder.

Excited fans gave their seal of approval to the book and Richard's work in general while waiting in the queue.

Chrissy Watson, from Alnwick, said: "I've read a lot of his books and he has a very distinctive style, which I really enjoy."

Sian Cannon, from Felton, said she also liked his style of writing and added that the storylines "always grab your attention."

Among his many accolades, Rev. Richard Coles was previously a member of the hit 80s group The Communards, co-presented Saturday Live on BBC Radio 4 for eleven years and appears, from time to time, on QI, Have I Got News For You, and Would I Lie To You?

He has won Christmas MasterChef, Celebrity Mastermind twice, was previously a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and also appeared on Celebrity Bake Off.
