Festive Season Launched in Morpeth with Record Breaking Crowds!

19 November 2019

Shoppers turned out in their thousands to enjoy the weekend’s Big Christmas Light Switch on in Morpeth.

The annual Christmas Lights Switch On event returned to the town on Saturday 16th November with the Town Centre and Sanderson Arcade joining forces to deliver one huge celebration in Morpeth.

The live music stage was located on Bridge Street and hosted this year by Smooth Radio. A packed  line up of live entertainment included carol singing from Morpeth All Saints School, performances from The Doo Wop Dollies, Ellington Colliery Band and also the return of  the popular SPARK drummers – with a huge finale from Voice of the Town Choir.

The lights were officially switched on by Morpeth Mayor Cllr Alison Byard, Mr & Mrs Claus and their elves, Smooth radio host Steve Coleman and Santa’s special little helper Ben Mundie, aged 8, who won the competition to help switch the lights on.

There was also a Santa’s Grotto in Sanderson Arcade, a Tipi Tipple Bar on Bridge Street and a huge Christmas window reveal from Rutherford’s of Morpeth.

The Christmas Market was open from 10am with a wide selection of foodie treats and great Christmas gift ideas from fantastic local traders. Morpeth Town Hall also held their annual Mistletoe Fair with two floors of festive must-haves.

Saturday also seen Morpeth Rotary open the Tree of Light inside Sanderson Arcade where customers can attach messages to the Christmas tree for loved ones. All donations for the Tree of Light are shared amongst three charities: Northumbria Blood Bikes, Tiny Lives and North of England Cancer Research.

The huge celebration was brought to a close with a spectacular firework display which could be seen all across the town.

Sanderson Arcade Centre Manager Joel Plumley said: “We have truly welcomed in the festive season this weekend and although the weather was poor it was fantastic to still see visitor numbers so high and Morpeth people wrapping up and coming down to see the lights switched on.

“We love to see everyone getting into the Christmas spirit and we have lots of festive entertainment planned for the upcoming weeks.”

Morpeth Christmas Light Switch on was organised by Sanderson Arcade in partnership with Morpeth Town Council. This year’s event was also sponsored by Rutherfords, The Flag Man and CW Builders.

Morpeth Christmas Park + Ride Facility was sponsored by Northern Gas Networks.
