Fizzy and Gabriella Steal the Ultimutt Prize at Sanderson Barkade

21 June 2022

Sanderson Barkade 2022 best in show was awarded to Cockapoo Fizzy and handler 6-year-old Gabriella Fisher.

The Sanderson Arcade event welcomed pooches of all shapes and sizes for a two-day extravaganza held throughout the Morpeth shopping Arcade.

With an itinerary packed full of market traders, demos and talks, all eyes were on the final Barkade competitions which saw over 50 dogs battling it out in all different categories for the coveted ‘Best in Show’ top prize.

On offer were winners rosettes, goody bags for category winners and a luxury doggy hamper worth over £100 from local business My Pet HQ.

Sanderson Barkade competitions include categories such as ‘Best Puppy’, ‘Golden Oldie’, ‘Owner most like their Dog’, ‘Best Dressed’ and the ‘Skill Triathlon’ which saw pups show off their waggy tails, sitting skills and pawshakes.

Each category and set of participants were brought on to the grass to strut their stuff. First category up was ‘Owner Most Like Their Dog’ and the winner was 6-year-old Gabriella with her matching curly haired Cockapoo, Fizzy.

The second category was ‘Golden Oldie’ which saw the crowd introduced to a range of elderly pooches. First prize was awarded to Milly an 11-year-old Labrador with handler, Max.

The hotly contested ’Best Puppy’ round was next and the most popular category with over 20 entries. The judges really deliberated on this category and decided on Lexi with handler, Josephine.

‘Fancy Dress’ was next and was crowned to Elise with Maddy, a pug in a blonde wig and tutu dressed up as Tinkerbell.

The ‘pup triathlon’ was really the category that the pooches had to work for with the judges looking for three key things: Waggiest Tail, Quickest Sit and most Solid Pawshake. Our winner was Murphy, a Bedlington Terrier with owner, Isla.

‘Best Rescue’ category had the whole crowd weeping as we heard of the hardship involved in this rescue and a journey across tides. Our winner was Brian Pugnesti, a pug who had been rescued from Hong Kong.

‘Best Junior Handler’ category saw children under 16 with their pooches, with late comers Amily and Dylan taking first prize with their fluffy friend, Maisy.

Barkade's overall best in show was selected from all the category winners and was given to Gabriella Fisher aged 6 with her ‘best friend’ cockapoo, Fizzy.

“I had a great day – Fizzy is my best friend and I am so happy to have won with her! I can’t wait to judge next year” said 6-year old Gabriella.

The reserve best in show was handed to ‘Golden Oldie’, Milly with owner Max.

Lottie Thompson, Centre Manager at Sanderson Arcade, said: “This is my favourite event at Sanderson Arcade and I am so happy to see so many returning pooches from last year’s Barkade! A huge congratulations to Gabriella and Fizzy who won our Best in Show category, we’ve already invited Gabriella and Fizzy back to come and be a judge at our next Barkade event".

The event was judged by Pets at Home and Keely Jukes (last years Best in Show Winner Owner), hosted by Matt Bailey and photographed by Rebecca Ashworth Earl. Our best in show winner hamper was donated by My Pet HQ.
