From Working Men’s Club to top fusion fashion at Morpeth’s Sanderson Arcade
12 July 2010
Fashion store Monsoon is the first major retail name announced to take space in the second phase of Morpeth’s prestigious Sanderson Arcade development due to open later this year.
Work started last month on transforming the former Morpeth Comrades Club into three brand new retail units – club members moved into their new premises after being relocated earlier this Spring.
Monsoon is taking a unit covering 2120 sq ft (197 sq m). The new store will trade alongside other major high street retailers including Marks and Spencer, EAST, Laura Ashley and Waterstones at the Arcade which was opened by Joanna Lumley OBE in November last year. The new store will create 20 new jobs in the town.
This next phase of work at Sanderson Arcade will be completed in the Autumn ready for opening as the centre nears its first birthday. The two further outlets cover 3,315 sq ft and 1,700 sq ft.
Launched in 1973, with its first boutique in London’s Knightsbridge, Monsoon is one of the leading destination brands on the UK high street with more than 405 Monsoon and Accessorize UK stores and over 1000 worldwide.
Retail Property Director at Dransfield Properties, developers and owners of Sanderson Arcade, Andrew Malley said: “Monsoon and Accessorize are great brands and we are confident they will do well here at Sanderson Arcade.
“It’s a great start to the line up of this next phase at Sanderson Arcade and we are already talking to a number of other companies keen to be here in Morpeth.”
Work started on phase two in May this year and is on schedule to be completed as Sanderson Arcade prepares to celebrate its first birthday in November.
Mark Crookes at CBRE is the letting agent for Sanderson Arcade; the first phase opened in November 2009 and was 95 per cent let. Since then EAST and Facets, a North East jewellery firm have taken the final two first phase units.
