Love Your Local Morpeth Market

28 May 2018

Morpeth Market for a 3rd year in row has celebrated NABAMA’s Love Your Local Market. The campaign is the UK’s largest annual celebration of retail and wholesale markets in the UK.

Starting on Wednesday 23rd May the celebration will run through to June Farmers Market on Saturday 3rd June which will include a host of local traders, live music and kids entertainment.

In line with the launch of the new Morpeth Markets campaign featuring the faces of regular traders, St. Roberts RC First School and All Saints First School were asked to draw portraits to the traders. On Wednesday the 23rd May, St. Roberts RC First School were invited to Morpeth Weekly Market for the unveiling of a special banner they helped to create. The banner includes portraits of regular Morpeth Market traders painted and drew by the children of St. Roberts. The portraits include Julian and his fresh fruit and vegetables, Elaine from Murphy’s Kitchen with her pies and pastries, Benny’s Toon Macaroons plus many more!

Morpeth All Saints First School have also drew portraits of the traders which will be revealed after half term and will be included in the new web banners on both the More in Morpeth and Sanderson Arcade websites.

Councillor Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for the environment and local services at Northumberland County Council said: “Markets provide a vibrant and colourful feature within our town centres, helping to boost the local economy and expanding the shopping offer.

"I am very pleased to see that through this initiative in Morpeth, young people are becoming aware of the market from an early age, and learning what sort of businesses trade from there.  They have produced some marvellous artwork, which I am sure will help to promote the market and its traders.

“I also urge people to support their local market and try shopping there - if they don’t already - helping to sustain them into the future.”

In addition to this, Local Councillors have been invited for a guided tour of the weekly market on Wednesday 30th May. The tour of Morpeth Market Place will be guided by county wide markets manager, Neil Brown and is part of the campaign to encourage and show local people why they should be shopping at Morpeth Market.

Morpeth Market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with Morpeth Town Council, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and other local organisations through the Morpeth Market working group.

The Morpeth Weekly Market is held every Wednesday from 9am - 3:30pm and the Farmers Market is the first Saturday of every month. The next Farmers Market is Saturday 3rd June 2018.
