Morpeth Food Festival is Going Green!

18 September 2019

Morpeth Food and Drink Festival will be implementing a strong sustainability initiative to help limit the use of single use plastic at next month’s event.

The event held over two days on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October is expected to attract more than 45,000 people to Morpeth town centre.

And all traders attending this year’s event have been issued with a list of “banned items” which the Festival’s very own Green Team will be policing – these include sauce sachets, plastic straws and polystyrene boxes.

The Green Team will look at ways the festival can reduce waste and monitor the new plastic polices put in place. The team will also work alongside the Morpeth Litter Pickers to keep the site clean and tidy. Northumberland County County Council  will also be providing the festival with extra recycling bins.

The festival’s big ban this year focuses on single use plastic bags and festival goers are asked to bring their own bags for anything they purchase.  Traders will also be issued with 100% recyclable branded paper bags.

Centre Manager of Sanderson Arcade, Joel Plumley, said “We are very proud of our new sustainability initiative and hope everyone does their part to help combat any waste from the festival. We want everyone to have a great time but it’s really important we also have in mind the impact on the environment.”

In addition to the banning of plastic items, any non –perishable food leftover at the end of the festival will be donated to a local food bank.

Traders are also given the opportunity to nominate themselves to win a ‘Sustainable Award’. Traders must provide evidence of Green Policies, Sustainable Packaging and information on their ingredients and products. The award comes with great publicity as well as free booking to next year’s Morpeth Food and Drink Festival!

Morpeth Food and Drink Festival will be held Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October and will be host to live music, chef demonstrations and fantastic local food and drink traders! This years premium sponsor is Porsche Centre Newcastle, find them in the centre of the festival both Saturday & Sunday.
