Record crowds turn out for Morpeth’s two day annual Food and Drink Festival

9 October 2018

The crowds turned out for a packed weekend of foodie fun and entertainment at the weekend as Morpeth hosted the town’s annual two day Festival of Food and Drink.

Organisers say this year’s festival has been the most successful since the event was launched six years ago – attracting record crowds across the two days of the busy event which was sponsored by Lexus Newcastle.

More than 100 traders lined Bridge Street showcasing some delicious local produce throughout the weekend as well as the town’s fabulous Farmers’ Market which could be found in the Market Place.

Highlights of the event included the amazing “Voice of the Town” people’s choir, Masterchef finalist Lorna Robertson cooking up a delicious seafood stew and a fabulous parade by the Morpeth Pipe Band.

The introduction of a new Posh Pen for festival goers to enjoy a drink and some great food-to-go also proved popular and “Talk and Tasters” master classes from local producers were also organised with Durham Distillery’s fabulous Gin O’ Clock master class pulling in the crowds.

For the first year a special “Trader of the Year” award was given with judges looking for presentation, produce, knowledge and customer service. Dozens of stalls scored well as the standard was so high but the judges picked out Kitty’s Ginger Wine as this year’s winner.

Other entertainment across the weekend included a packed schedule of chef demonstrations in the event’s demo kitchen as well as music and dance from a host of local groups and performers including the Mason Cummins Academy of Irish Dancing.

Entertainment for younger festival goers included face painting, stilt walkers Punch and Judy Shows and a fairground carousel.

The main sponsor of the annual event was Lexus Newcastle and other sponsors include; Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade, Morpeth Town Council, Northern Gas Networks Strutt and Parker, Coca Cola, Glaceau Smartwater, The Co-op, Northumberland County Council, Beach Design and Sanderson Arcade.

Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade, one of the main organisers, Joel Plumley, said: “We would like to a say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make sure this year’s Morpeth Food and Drink Festival really was the biggest and best yet - especially our main sponsors Lexus Newcastle.

“It was a fantastic celebration of the wonderful local food and drink producers we have in the region as well as some great local musical talent.

“We have had wonderful support from our sponsors as well as the many local groups and businesses who get involved with the festival to make sure it continues to be a great success. We had some lovely new features at the event this year and we’re looking forward already to planning the 2019 event!”

Morpeth Market is managed by Northumberland County Council and Sanderson Arcade, working in partnership with Morpeth Town Council, Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and other local organisations through the Morpeth Market working group.

The Morpeth Market is held every Wednesday from 9am – 3:30pm and the Farmer's Market is the first Saturday of every month.
