Sculpture Commissioned for Sanderson Arcade

27 July 2008

The leading British sculptor and designer Judy Boyt has been commissioned to produce a piece of art at Sanderson Arcade taking inspiration from Morpeth’s rich market town history.

Dransfield Properties Ltd and Ethel Austin Properties Ltd are working with Judy to produce an eye catching piece which will be placed in the new arcade once the development is completed.

Judy  has won awards for her sculptures of animals and has been researching Morpeth’s history as a trading town for Aberdeen Angus Bulls.

Where the town’s present market place stands bulls from across Scotland and the north of England were once traded.

To reflect this aspect of the town’s history Judy has now designed a fantastic life size sculpture of a black bull which will be in  pride of place in the new arcade being created by the £32 million development.

The bull will be positioned above the entrance to the arcade from the market place.

As the piece of art will be above the arcade entrance Judy is working in fibre glass resin to create a bronze effect without the weight of bronze.

Judy’s largest sculpture, called 'Rebellion' is of a horse twice the normal size. Sited in the City of London it was awarded the RBS medal for Sculpture.

She said: “This is a really exciting project and I have done a great deal of research and worked with the local community in Morpeth to really reflect the history of the area.

“I have visited the site several times to see where the sun comes in to ensure the bull is in the best position so everyone can get a good view of it as they come and go in the arcade.”

Dransfield Properties have worked with artists on a number of the company’s retail developments to create high quality public art as an important part of a scheme.

Managing Director, Mark Dransfield, said: “We are delighted to be working with Judy on this project in Morpeth and we can’t wait to see the finished sculpture which will look stunning in the arcade.”
